Cannot activate new install FreePBX 12

I believe this is a Firewall or NAT issue, I put the system directly on the Internet without a NAT or Firewall and immediately was able to activate. I am now trying to understand why the system would not activate when behind the NAT. Can anyone help me to understand this?
